Chris Gehringer's journey
towards mastering superstardom began in 1984 after his graduation from the
Institute of Audio Research.
His first job was as a
cutting assistant at Trutone Records (NJ). In 1985 he joined Frankford-Wayne
Mastering and became part of the Coyne-Powers-Gehringer triumvirate that
dominated the mastering of Dance and R&B records throughout the 1980's.
The trio's move to the Hit
Factory in 1988 coincided with the explosion in popularity of Rap and Hip-Hop.
There, Chris virtually defined mastering for the genre, working on landmark
releases by Naughty By Nature, Mobb Deep, Wu Tang Clan and PM Dawn. In 2000
Chris joined Sterling Sound and continued to expand his discography with
projects by Madonna, Rihanna, T.I., Nelly, Nas, Joss Stone, Nelly Furtado and Wyclef
Jean.
Although highly technical
in his approach, Chris downplays this with a relaxed manner and a personal
connection to his clients that helps him truly understand where his clients
want to take their projects. Chris lives in New Jersey with his wife Debbie and
their three children.
